What’s been amazing about the whole PUMA movement is how quickly the preferred media of its adherents shifted. Almost overnight, once-reviled outlets like Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and the conservative blogosphere became trusted sources of information. Part of this was because these were the only outlets giving PUMA a voice, Fox in particular being very happy to magnify Democratic disunity, no matter the source. More important, though, was that these media sources were telling PUMAniacs exactly what they wanted to hear: Obama-bashing. This explains why so many PUMAs readily accept the word of oft-imprisoned con man, or nearly any crazy thing Texas Darlin can imagine up, all with no evidentiary backing to speak of.
It’s sad, then, to see such displays of confirmation and selection bias reaching a whole new level. Egalia at Tennessee Guerilla Women linked today to this article, which itself is innocuous: it’s a mostly accurate description of the sexism Hillary Clinton had to face in the primary campaign. What’s interesting is that the source, The People’s Daily, is the media organ of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Egalia apparently thinks that state-run media from dictatorships are excellent sources, as long as they tell her exactly what she wants to hear. I suggest she try the New Light of Myanmar next, apparently the Obama-hate is top notch over there.
